Legal Training Scheme
Why join EDF Energy as a trainee solicitor?
Energy is important to absolutely everyone. It's a complicated and ever-evolving industry, and a specialised regulatory environment. And, in the future, there will be many challenges to face – not least of which are the unpredictable effects of climate change.
In short, EDF Energy is involved in important, bigger picture issues. To tackle them, however, we need truly insightful advice and creative thinking from our legal team. As a graduate, you will be involved heavily in this. We won't see you as a 'support function' as many law firms do: we have the confidence in you to put you in front of clients, and challenge you with big issues.
Some of what we're doing won't have been done before. Many of the projects we're involved in will be on a large scale. And we need to take into account the needs of millions of customers – ranging from major businesses, through to airports and transport networks, through to individuals in both the wealthier and the poorer sections of society.
Let's not forget that we are also a large, successful business – one that is consistently looking for new and better ways to work. So, as a lawyer, you'll be involved in the myriad of areas the running of a 13,000-strong organisation brings with it: employment, acquisitions, litigation, contracts, restructuring. The possibilities of what you could be involved in are many.
What will you be doing?
Probably much more than you expect. One of the key advantages of our scheme here is variety. With the exception of very specialist areas such as tax and pensions, our legal teams offer advice on all areas of law.
So your training will take the form of four or five rotations around various business areas, during which you'll gain practical experience in at least three distinct areas of Law, covering both contentious and non-contentious work.
Day-to-day, you'll be working on a mixture of projects and cases. Some of our current trainees have been involved in: negotiating sponsorship for Rugby Union's EDF Energy Cup, and with Arsenal FC; preparing contracts for sustainable technologies, like electric vehicle charging posts and wind turbines; contributing to a seminal Human Rights case for all energy suppliers.
You'll also be directly exposed to a whole range of people, both inside and outside the company – and at virtually any level of seniority. You'll work with clients and attend high-level meetings very early on in your career.
